Hope all is well.
As Mother’s Day is approaching in May (I know it’s still a couple of months away), I want to take the time to express the importance of this day for me and my family.
Disclaimer: It took me a few weeks to write this due to my emotional state.
For those who know me, know my story and for those who don’t I will share it.
On October 8, 2016 at 10:54 pm my son, my first born of 19 years old was murdered due to gun violence. Up until this day it still feels unreal. This has been a difficult journey for me and my family. My life has changed ever since the incident. Behind the smile I carry everyday there is pain, anger, frustration and sadness, and so much more. Over the year’s I’ve been trying to stay positive not only for myself but for my health and most importantly for my other two children that need me dearly. I can honestly tell you it’s not easy.
I’ve gotten so much support from a lot of people and I am truly blessed. This has gotten me to stay focus, strong, powerful and brave. “I am so proud of myself for making it where I am today”, I say this to myself every day to keep me moving forward… You can only imagine what I’m going through daily.
With that being said, every year for Mother’s Day there is a Mother’s Day walk for Peace. The walk is a 5k for families who have been impacted by gun violence. I’ve never joined the walk because I was not mentally ready to do so. At the beginning of this year, I set a lot of goals for myself and one of them is to walk the 5k in my son’s honor. By doing this walk I will rise my son’s name and support other families in our walk for Peace.
I am reaching out to those of you who can walk side by side with me, my kids and help me keep my head up to the end. I don’t think I can do this on my own and any support would be greatly appreciated.
I need your help. If you could support The Peace Institute by donating, I would greatly appreciate it. I know that money can be tight, so please know that even $5 helps us get closer to my goal! Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll be happy to answer them. Link to follow:
I’m ready to make my team happen!!! Make it stop!!! End gun violence!!
Team Carli (Carlos David Lind) September 26, 1997-October 8, 2016
Every year in the United States, approximately 15,000 people are murdered. For every homicide victim, there are at least 10 immediate people directly impacted by that loss. It is safe to say each year there are at least 150,000 new survivors of homicide victims dealing with the emotional, physical and financial stress of losing a loved one to a traumatic death such as murder. This is not including extended family members, classmates/colleagues, teachers/students, entire communities. Nor does this number include families who are impacted by a loved one committing a murder. Together we can heal and have an impact.
Rise Up! Walk with us. The Annual Mother’s Day Walk for Peace started in 1996 so mothers of murdered children could receive support and love from their neighbors. Twenty-three years later, the Mother’s Day Walk continues to be a powerful way to honor our loved ones who have been murdered and embrace our partners in peacemaking. The Mother’s Day Walk is also the Peace Institute’s most important fundraising event. We hope you will help us raise our goal of $400,000 so we can continue to work to tip the scale toward justice for families and communities that are stigmatized by murder.
All walkers must register. Registration cost this year is $10 per walker, however no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Registration fees go to help us reach our goal of $400,000 to sustain our programs and services.
