My name is Debra and I am the grandmother of Kenai Whyte who was murdered in February 2016. Kenai was a sweet, loving and caring 3-year-old, a happy little boy. Our world has been forever changed without him. This is the reason I walk. Not only for peace but for unity and love for our city.
We all want justice but some of us get justice and some of us do not. I do not feel Kenai got justice at all. 12 years is no time for taking a 3-year-old child’s life.
Although no amount of time will bring Kenai back, as long as I have breath and the ability to walk, I will keep Kenai’s life alive so that he is never forgotten. His precious life was taken way too soon.
My grandson was so full of love. He had this infectious smile that would light up the whole room. Kenai was so full of energy and had his whole life ahead of him.
Kenai would want us to go on with life. That is why I am asking you to join me and countless others at the Mother’s Day Walk for Peace. I am also asking for donations for the Peace Institute, so they can continue to help those that are left behind to grieve the loss of our loved ones.
No amount is too small.
Team Kenai, let’s do this again!
Every year in the United States, approximately 15,000 people are murdered. For every homicide victim, there are at least 10 immediate people directly impacted by that loss. It is safe to say each year there are at least 150,000 new survivors of homicide victims dealing with the emotional, physical and financial stress of losing a loved one to a traumatic death such as murder. This is not including extended family members, classmates/colleagues, teachers/students, entire communities. Nor does this number include families who are impacted by a loved one committing a murder. Together we can heal and have an impact.
Rise Up! Walk with us. The Annual Mother’s Day Walk for Peace started in 1996 so mothers of murdered children could receive support and love from their neighbors. Twenty-three years later, the Mother’s Day Walk continues to be a powerful way to honor our loved ones who have been murdered and embrace our partners in peacemaking. The Mother’s Day Walk is also the Peace Institute’s most important fundraising event. We hope you will help us raise our goal of $400,000 so we can continue to work to tip the scale toward justice for families and communities that are stigmatized by murder.
All walkers must register. Registration cost this year is $10 per walker, however no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Registration fees go to help us reach our goal of $400,000 to sustain our programs and services.
